David Sylvian was the lead singer of Japan, one the most interesting new-wave bands. Wandering between glam rock and New Romantic movement they were so innovative and original that it was impossible to pin them down. Having reached commercial peak in early 80s, the band dissolved and Sylvian pursued solo career, similarly full of unexpected turns and surprising collaborations.
David Sylvian's is extremely intriguing and his image is definitely one of the many things which make him so fascinating. And it's also difficult to pin down, not only because Sylvian's look evolved throughout his career, but also because it never obviously adhered to one particular style.
Sylvian's style embodies 80s fashion, but lots of his outfits would look hip also nowadays. He fluctuated between librarian modesty and baroque lavishness. He was androgynous but in subtle, refined way. He looked unearthly but at the same time naturally and effortlessly.

David Sylvian once mentioned that his style, extravagant as it may be, was not a disguise, it expressed who he really was. This sincerity and nonconformity make him a truly remarkable figure.
David Sylvian is an icon because he always did what he wanted to with his music, never compromised and despite the popularity he never lost his mystique.
But his is also a great source of fashion inspiration, especially when it comes to blazers, shirts and tuxedos.
The thin-framed round glasses work perfectly with David's big blond hair with assymetric fringe and pale face. It's a really nice twist to "an intellectual" look. I also think it's impressive that David's hair and lots of his outfits, even if they may have this 80s vibe, still look fairly modern.
The glasses and black and white stripes make up somewhat more casual outfit. It brings to mind Warhol's Factory hip style. The high-waisted, baggy tailored pants are one of the most important elements of David's style. He wore them in various ways, mixing them with different items, always impeccably balancing the proportions. It seems that they're back in style, just Look at Lorde's Coachella outfit or Savages' Jehnny Beth usual concert uniform.
One of my favourite looks by David, it perfectly sums up his style in early Japan days. I especially like the addition of bomber leather jacket:
David Sylvian made greyish uniforms combined with white shirt look like the most exciting outfit. I don't know what is his secret but I suppose it may be an interesting mixture of patterns, even in this solem colour palette and playing with proportions. I guess great hair and cheekbones don't hurt as well.
Incorporation of dandy style was one of the main features of his earlier outfits. Look how perfectly the red gloves go with the lips.
David often wore sets of colourful bangle bracelets, which added a nice touch to his looks. Otherwise his jewelerry of choice was gold and bold - just look at those earrings. Don't forget about red, glossy lips and smudges of eyeliner.
Finally, tuxedos and bow ties - notice how natural he looks even in so seemingly festive clothes.
